Five quarterbacks combined for 367 yards passing and the defense registered eight sacks in front of 6,841 fans at the 2019 Boise State Football Spring Game, Saturday at Albertsons Stadium.
Leading the air attack was Jaylon Henderson. The Kingwood, Texas, native completed 9-of-13 passes for 187 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown to Khalil Shakir on his first throw of the day.
Shakir finished with three catches for 96 yards and the one score. John Hightower added three receptions for 92 yards and Stefan Cobbs gained 69 yards on three catches. Ten different players had at least one reception in the game.
In addition to Henderson, Hank Bachmeier, Kaiden Bennett, Zach Matlock and Riley Smith each saw action at quarterback. Bennett went 3-for-4 for 41 yards and Smith had 57 yards on 4-of-8 passing.
The running game picked up 91 yards on 37 carries and two scores. Included in the total was minus-36 yards on eight sacks. Andrew Van Buren had a game-high 47 yards on 12 carries while Robert Mahone (5 carries for 26 yards) and Marcus Washington (4 rushes for 12 yards) each picked up a rushing touchdown.
Defensively, Curtis Weaver recorded two sacks while a half dozen other had one each. Chris Mitchell led in tackles with six (four solo). Tyreque Jones notched five tackles (four solo), a sack, a forced fumble and pass break-up. Dylan Herberg made three stops, including a sack, tallied a quarterback hurry and broke up a pair of passes, including one on the final play of the game.
Boise State will open the 2019 regular season in Jacksonville against Florida State, Aug. 31. The home opener is currently slated for Sept. 7, against Marshall. Season tickets are currently available at //BroncoSports.com/tickets.
