Idaho’s Economy is Near the Bottom in Terms of Immigrant Impact

Boise (670 KBOI News) – With the issue of immigration reform and border security front and center in Washington DC, both sides are talking about how much immigrants — legal and illegal — affect our economy.

But there’s not much of an effect on Idaho’s economy at all, says Wallet Hub analyst Jill Gonzalez. She says they looked at US Census Bureau data, and found most of Idaho’s immigrant community is poor, and not very well educated.

“In Idaho right now, we see the 4th lowest household income of the foreign-born population,” said Gonzalez.  “Obviously, giving back less than in taxes.  It also has the second lowest percentage of foreign-born adults with a bachelor’s degree or higher.”

She also said there aren’t a lot of foreign college students here…in other states, they often stick around after graduation and start business, go into medical practice, and so on.  But that’s not the case in Idaho.
