A Garden City man pleaded guilty last week to first-degree kidnapping in connection with a June incident in which police say he zip-tied a woman to a bed and raped her.
Douglas Kaufman, faced five felonies, including rape. Earlier this month he also pleaded guilty to the first-degree kidnapping charge.
The woman who was his victim says she was able to break the zip ties on her feet and escape to a neighbors house when he left to buy cigarettes.
Initially, attorneys scheduled a five-day jury trial to begin Feb. 4. With Kaufman’s guilty plea to kidnapping, however, the trial was vacated. Under the plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to move to dismiss the other four charges Kaufman faced.
The Idaho Press reports, he now has a hearing scheduled for March 29.
In Idaho, first-degree kidnapping is punishable by death or up to life in prison.
