Boise (670 KBOI News) – The Boise School District is taking steps to mitigate the lead that has been found in the water at 23 schools.

District spokesman Dan Hollar says lead solder used in some fixtures at the schools is the likely cause, and they’re working to replace those fixtures…like drinking fountains and faucets.

He says they tested 27 schools that were built before 1986.

“We went above and beyond the requirements and decided  why don’t we test all of our schools that were built before 1986,” said Hollar.  “That’s the year Congress banned the use of lead solder in plumbing materials.  We have spent the last month and a half testing those 27 sites.”

He says they’ve instructed the janitorial staffers at the 23 schools that tested positive to flush the water system in the morning, and then again at night.
