ITD Divers Find Unexploded Artillery Rounds Under Walter’s Ferry Bridge

ITD divers find what appears to be an unexploded artillery round under the Walter’s Ferry Bridge

Boise (670 KBOI News) – It’s not what repair workers were expecting to find under the Highway 45 bridge at Walter’s Ferry.

Idaho Transportation Department spokesman Jake Melder says divers were inspecting the piers under the bridge on October 31st, when they found something that looked like an artillery round on the river bottom.

“After that first one we found, law enforcement was able to get a bomb squad out there,” said Melder.  “They were able to collect the device and dispose of it.   That happened on October 31st;  November 1 they went out there and found the second device.  The Navy came in to remove this one.”

Melder says they have no record of anything like this ever having happened before, and they have no idea where the ordnance may have come from.

But just to be safe, Melder says they’ve stopped all work on the bridge, to do a thorough search of the river bottom under the bridge.
