Boise Police Officers Cleared of Wrongdoing in New Year’s Day Shooting

Boise (670 KBOI News) – Two Boise Police officers are cleared of wrongdoing in the New Year’s Day shooting of a man on South Wild Phlox Way.

Captain Ron Winegar with the BPD says Twin Falls County Prosecutor Grant Loebs, who reviewed the case after the Garden City Police finished their investigation, found no wrongdoing.

Winegar says the body cam video from the officers wasn’t entirely clear, but the audio was.

“What is very helpful is the audio of one of the videos we provided,” said Winegar.  “You can definitely hear the officer as he contacts the subject, and tries to get him to tell him his name.  He tells him numerous times ‘we want to help you’, tries to get him to show him his hands.”

The officers believed the man had a gun, so when he advanced and ignored orders, they opened fire.

As they were giving him first aid, the officers noticed he had a number of self-inflicted knife wounds. He was taken to the hospital, and has since recovered.

The officers are still on duty…Winegar says they’ve handled it very well.
