Blackfoot (670 KBOI News) – Bingham County Sheriff Craig Rowland says not only is threatening a school not a joke, it’s also against the law.
He says Firth High and Middle Schools are open again after going into lockdown this morning. About 7:15 they got a call, saying a student had made a threat against the high school while riding a school bus.
They found the bus and took he student in for questioning.
“He didn’t make the threat on the school bus,” said Rowland. “I think what we’re going to find is this was something that happened a couple of weeks ago, It wasn’t directed toward anybody or anything like that. I think it went from one person, to another person, to another person…you know how that goes.”
The recently-passed school threats law pertains to threats made against a school, or students, on or off campus. The threat alone is a misdemeanor, having a weapon with the intent to carry out the threat is a felony.
Rowland says they’re making sure the teachers and students know that even joking about violence against schools, teachers, other students, or any staff is a crime.
