Boise (670 KBOI News) – A bill which would make it illegal for slower moving vehicles to impede faster-moving vehicles on freeways is headed to the full House floor for debate.
House Bill 471 cleared the Transportation and Defense Committee on a 14-3 vote…the bill’s sponsor, Representative Lance Clow of Twin Falls says they’re not telling truck drivers they can’t pass, just they need to be aware of who’s coming up behind them before they change lanes.
“The situation often occurs when a vehicle in the right lane moves to the left lane, in order to pass a slower-moving vehicle also in the right lane,” said Clow. “This is allowed, but this bill clarifies that it must not impede traffic moving at a legal speed for an unreasonable period of time.”
Incidentally, the law already says slower moving traffic has to stay to the right.
Representative Kelly Packer of McCammon was concerned that RV drivers who try to pass slower moving vehicles could be cited if they held up cars in the left lane. Clow said it would be up to the discretion of the ISP troopers enforcing the law whether to issue a ticket.
