Officials Identify Driver and Victims Killed in Fruitland Accident

The two pedestrians who were killed after they were hit by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon in Fruitland have been identified.

The Payette County Coroner says Mathew and Amelia Parkinson died from blunt force trauma after being hit by a car.

According to the coroner, Mathew was 22-years-old, and Amelia was 17-years-old.

The two married in December the coroner says.

Witnesses told investigators that they were walking down the sidewalk, holding hands, when they were struck from behind. Idaho State Police say the vehicle was heading north on Highway 95 in Fruitland when the vehicle “suddenly veered off the roadway and onto the northbound sidewalk.”

KBOI-2-TV reports, the driver in the crash is identified as Jason Verwer. He is in custody and being held for a mental health evaluation.

Troopers say the cause is being investigated as a homicide.
