Suspect arrested following shooting death of Nyssa Reserve Officer

The suspect wanted after a Nyssa Police Department Reserve Officer was shot and killed over the weekend, was located and arrested Monday morning.

Officer Joseph Johnson responded to a call of a violent individual who was threatening people near a Nyssa residence and damaging property Saturday night.

The suspect, Rene Castro of Nyssa fled the scene in a vehicle and led Officer Johnson on a pursuit through Nyssa.

Castro stopped at the corner of Locust and 3rd Street North and Officer Johnson pulled off the road as well. That’s where Castro fatally shot Officer Johnson and then fled.

Monday morning around 6:40, numerous police agencies, including the Oregon State Police SWAT team and members of the FBI located Castro at a residence in Ontario.

Around 7:40am, Castro came out of a structure and was taken into custody.
