A judge on Wednesday ruled there’s enough evidence to move the case forward of a man accused of hiding his mother’s body for months or even years in his car in a field in Eagle and continuing to collect her benefits.
William Rhoton is charged with one count of failure to report a death to the coroner or law enforcement, one charge of concealment or alteration of evidence, two counts of grand theft by deception, and one count of forgery.
Prosecutors say he did not report the death of his elderly mother, who was in her 90s, and hid her body, first in his massive home in Eagle, and then in the back of his car on a property nearby.
The Idaho Press reports, the case includes theft charges because Rhoton is accused of claiming his mother, Barbara Rhoton, was alive so he could continue to receive Social Security and other benefits delivered to a joint account they shared.
The case’s prosecutor also says she believes Rhoton was trying to hide his mother’s manner of death.
