Rodriguez: Canyon County Needs New, Less Expensive Jail Plan

Nampa (670 KBOI News) – As the dust is settling in Canyon County after the jail bond went down to defeat at the polls last night, the question on the minds of many people is “what now”?

Nampa City Councilman Victor Rodriguez is a member of the Concerned Citizens for Canyon County, a group that formed to oppose this version of a jail bond.

He says yes, a new jail is needed, and will be in the future…but this design was too expensive, and would have been too much of a burden on taxpayers.

“I know the jailers want to have a cell system, ’cause it’s a little more secure…that’s what they say,” said Rodriguez.  “I don’t believe that.  I think a pod system is just as easy, and it’s a little more economical.  I wish we could get six or seven options for a jail, and a design, structure and feasibility, and pick one from there.  Or build one ourselves.”

He says he’d like to meet with Sheriff Kieran Donahue, and the County Commission and hammer out a better plan, that doesn’t hurt taxpayers.
