Boise (670 KBOI News) – As Senate Bill 1159 is going through the final steps of the legislative process, and possibly headed to Governor Little’s desk, four former state Attorneys General are weighing in.

It would tighten the requirements to get citizens initiatives onto the ballot, and cut the time period in which initiative supporters must gather the mandated number of signatures from 18 months to 6 months.

In a letter to the legislature, former AGs Tony Park, Wayne Kidwell, David Leroy and Jim Jones warned that the courts may find SB 1159 unconstitutional, should it become law.

The letter quoted the state Constitution’s provision, that the people have the unfettered right to alter, reform or abolish the government whenever they deem it necessary.

SB 1159 has made it through to the House floor, where it could be taken into final consideration Thursday.
