Bill Would Create a “Blue Alert” System in Idaho

Boise (670 KBOI News) – A bill which would create a system similar to the Amber Alert, only for crimes and threats against law enforcement officers, is headed to the Full Senate for a vote.

Lieutenant Colonel Sheldon Kelley with the Idaho State Police told the Senate Judiciary and Rules Committee the would create a Blue Alert system in Idaho, which would be administered by the ISP.

“The Blue Alert provides for rapid dissemination of information to law enforcement agencies, the media and the public, about violent offenders who have killed, seriously injured, or pose an imminent threat to law enforcement, and to the public” said Kelley.

Kelley says a Blue Alert would be issued when an officer is killed or is missing in the line of duty, or there is an imminent threat to law enforcement.

There would also have to be a suspect name, physical description or vehicle description.

The Blue Alert system was created by Congress in 2015, after the ambush of two New York City cops, who were shot while sitting in their patrol car.
