Boise (670 KBOI News) – Summer is over…not officially, but with the Labor Day weekend in the rearview mirror, the Idaho State Police are tallying the death toll of the 100 Deadliest Days…or the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Lieutenant Robert Rausch with the ISP says 100 people died on Idaho roads this year, compared to 90 who died during the same time period in 2017. Believe it or not, DUIs weren’t the leading cause of deadly crashes, either.

“Inattention to driving, whether it be not paying attention to what’s in front of you, or falling asleep, or doing some other activity besides driving, those things are number one,” said Rausch.  “Number two comes down to aggressive driving; speed, failure to yield, following too closely.”

Rausch says impaired driving — people under the influence of alcohol or drugs — is the number three cause of crashes.

Rausch says volume of traffic, and the length of trips are also contributors to the summer months being the deadliest on Idaho roads.
