Flags Ordered to Half-Staff, But Who Passes the Word?

Boise (670 KBOI) – Until sunset Tuesday, American flags should be lowered to half staff, by proclamation of President Trump. According to the proclamation, it’s a mark of “solemn respect” for those affected by today’s shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas.

It may come as a surprise, but there’s no official system for notifying anyone of an order to lower the flag.

Daniel Foster with the Idaho Department of Administration says word will come from one or two sources.

“The best way is to watch for the President or the Governor’s office to release that information in any fashion they choose,” Said Foster.  “The official word needs to come from them.  There is a proclamations page on the White House website, where those things should be posted.”

He stressed should.

Foster himself has an unofficial email list of state agencies that he uses to pass along the notifications, but from there, it’s up to word of mouth to spread the news.
