Fast Food Friends

I enjoy keeping up with friends on social media. I get to see them strolling the sunny beaches of Hawaii, sharing a trip to Disneyland or taking selfies of their tummies at the cruise ship buffet. But it’s also a sad case of information overload. I see so many posts from people who have lost a family member, or gained one. I can’t possibly keep up with how many people have lost or found a pet, or a job. My sadness or happiness for them is sincere at the time. But after a day goes by, I have trouble remembering who is going through what. I feel awful when I see someone in person and ask “Hey, how have you been?” Only to hear “Well, my Grandmother passed away last month. You made a comment about it on my page.” Ohhhhhh, that’s awkward. As much as I like seeing the hundreds of daily updates, we’ve become a “fast food friend” society. It fills you up for a few minutes, but then it’s gone. Last week, I was lucky enough to spend lunch with a friend I’ve known since 1978. And THAT was memorable! Don’t forget to spend REAL time with friends, instead of just scrolling through their lives on your screen.
